“I ka nānā no a 'ike”
By observing, one learns ('Ōlelo No'eau #1186)
Hawaiʻi is rich with news, ʻike kūpuna, mele and moʻolelo, and KILO Hawai’i is a modern day program that brings these treasures to an audience eager to explore, learn and understand their Island Home.
Kilo, the skill of observing nature, has been a practice set aside in Hawaiʻi, a neglect that has contributed to an "out of balance" state for the islands. It is absolutely crucial to kilo here in Hawaiʻi and help make our communities more vibrant and better prepared to handle challenges.
The Kilo program is built on the trusted foundations of Hawaiʻi’s rich nūpepa tradition. In the second half of the 19th century, Hawaiʻi had one of the world's most vibrant newspaper scenes, with a staggering literacy rate of over 90 percent in the mid-1830s. These Nūpepa Hawaiʻi offered a wonderful mix of news, myth, and stories from other cultures, keeping audiences informed and entertained.
