Who we are
Kilo Hawaiʻi is an independent and indigenous-led newsroom that strives to tell the stories of our Hawaiian home while training, coaching and nurturing Hawaiʻiʻs next generation of trusted storytellers.
Kilo is the Hawaiian practice of paying close attention to the world around you. Kilo can mean to watch the waves and the winds before you go out on the water. Kilo can mean to listen to the birds before entering the forest. Kilo can mean to listen intently to elders sharing their wisdom. Kilo is the practice of deeply examining the world we live in and learning the patterns to live in balance.
Kilo Hawaiʻi has developed a novel journalism approach that began with a grant from the Indigenous Journalists Association/Climate Beacon News Initiative/Solutions Journalism Network. When it comes to Solutions-based journalism, Kilo Hawaiʻi will strongly consider indigenous lifeways.
Kilo Hawaiʻi has adapted its storytelling to the audience's preferred medium. You can find Kilo Hawaiʻi on television, on radio, on streaming, on social media, on the web or in your e-mail inbox.
